GIVERNY
It's the village that Claude Monet looked for, during weeks to live and develop his art. Not too far way from Paris, and the art dealers like Durand-Ruel who could buy his paintings, but far away enough to be in the countryside, in the middle of nature, flowers, haystacks, poppies... and live happy with his family.
He lived in Giverny between 1883 and his death in 1920, and though he traveled to different places durind this period and painted many different sites, he produced a lot of pictures here.
The village of Giverny has not changed a lot after his death : it is still a charming village with limestone, brick or half-timbered houses. His property was bequested to the French Academy of Fine Arts who restored it, thanks to the participation of generous donors, many of them from United States. It's now a pleasant visit, where you can follow in the footsteps of the master.
